District Leadership Teams
The District Leadership Teams are a key component of the Science Partnerships' Professional Learning Model. District leaders, site administrators, and teacher leaders meet quarterly to engage in strategic planning to support a cohesive science implementation plan for elementary students.
We draw on the core principles of improvement science and shared leadership to remove barriers to access to science learning in the elementary grades and improve the learning experiences for students. Leadership teams within diverse district settings develope a shared leadership practice that builds the capacity for change and improvement through the use of Carnegie Improvement Science tools to begin to examine their school system to identify historical practices, outdated policies, and beliefs that created barriers to elementary science access.
District Leadership NGSS Implementation Toolkit
Peer-Reviewed and Practitioner Papers and Tools
Measuring Science Instructional Practice: A Survey Tool for the Age of NGSS- a white paper for practitioners that describes a survey instrument (Science Instructional Practices; SIPS) created to measure a range of pedagogical approaches relevant to science education in the current context of NGSS reform.
Guide to District Action Next Generation Science Standards- this guide provides district and community leaders with a recommended process and tools to develop an effective district-wide implementation plan.
Strengthening Leadership for Standards-Based Education: A New Typology and Survey Tool to Identify Teacher Leaders- this white paper describes the diverse types of teacher leadership and provides a tool to help match individual teachers with teacher leadership opportunities.
The Diverse Faces of Teacher Leadership; A Typology and Survey Tool- The purpose of this mixed methodology study was to operationalize distinct types of teacher leadership into an organized typology, based on case studies of teacher leaders in a science education project. In addition, through confirmatory factor analysis, evidence for factors representing the distinct types of teacher leadership identified in the typology was found in a general teacher leadership survey. Implications for teacher leadership research and practice are discussed.
The presentation, Increasing Access to Science in Elementary through Distributed Leadership and the Principles of Improvement Science, was delivered during the 2023 National Science Teaching Association Annual Conference.
