What is Three-Dimensional Science Teaching and Learning?

The goal of phenomena-based teaching is for students to able to accurately explain how and why phenomena occur using the Science and Engineering Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core Ideas of NGSS (Spiegel, 2006).

The California Next Generation Science Standards (CA-NGSS), weave together three equally important and distinct dimensions (science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and cross cutting concepts) across the disciplines of life science, physical science, and earth and space science in order to form each Performance Expectation. The three dimensions work together to help students build a cohesive understanding and make sense of core science ideas.
